What it costs to run
Less than most people expect. A bathroom-sized electric mat draws about as much as a couple of light fixtures while it's actively heating, and a programmable thermostat means it only runs when it's useful — warm for the morning routine, off while the house is empty. It's a comfort feature with a small utility footprint, not a second furnace.
Details that separate a good install from a callback
- An uncoupling or heat membrane under the tile protects it from cracking and directs heat upward instead of losing it into the subfloor.
- Insulating below (especially over concrete) makes the system respond faster and run cheaper.
- The right thermostat — a floor-sensing, programmable model, wired by a licensed electrician.
- Coverage planning — heat goes where feet go; there's no point heating under the vanity.
